UNS R30020

Product Specification: LION® R30020 (Stellite 20 Type) Cobalt-Based Alloy

LION® R30020 is a premium cobalt-chromium-tungsten alloy designed for applications requiring maximum resistance to severe abrasion, erosion, and chemical corrosion. Known in the industry as Stellite 20, this grade features a high volume fraction of hard carbides (over 30%), making it one of the most wear-resistant alloys in the Stellite family.

1. Key Performance Advantages

  • Superior Abrasion Resistance: High carbon and tungsten content create a microstructure optimized for resisting sliding wear and particle erosion.
  • Excellent Red Hardness: Maintains its high hardness (approx. 52 HRC) even at elevated service temperatures.
  • Chemical Stability: Highly resistant to aggressive chemical media, especially in environments where mechanical wear and corrosion occur simultaneously.
  • Precision Performance: Ideal for components requiring a high-quality surface finish and tight dimensional tolerances under friction.

2. Technical Specifications (Nominal Composition)

unsurSymbolWeight % (Typical)
KobaltCoBaki
ChromiumCr32.0 – 34.0%
TungstenW17.0 – 18.5%
KarbonC2.4 – 2.6%
nikelNi≤ 2.5%
besiFe≤ 3.0%

3. Physical & Mechanical Properties

  • Hardness: 48 – 55 HRC (Typical 52 HRC)
  • Density: 8.70 g/cm³
  • Melting Range: 1230°C – 1300°C (2245°F – 2370°F)
  • Impact Strength: Low (Brittle due to high carbide content)

4. Primary Applications

  • Industrial Wear Parts: Bearing sleeves, rotary seal rings, and centerless grinding work rests.
  • Fluid Handling: Slurry pump components, homogenizer valve seats, and needle valves.
  • Precision Tooling: Surgical needle holders and specialized cutting edges.

5. Fabrication Guidance

  • Kimpalan: Can be applied via PTA (Plasma Transferred Arc) or Laser Cladding. High preheat (approx. 500°C) is necessary to prevent cracking.
  • Machining: Extremely difficult to machine. Best finished by grinding with silicon carbide or diamond wheels.
